CMRS Colloquium Series: The Persian Coast: The Rise and Fall of Zaytun

The Rise and Fall of Zaytun
Mon, April 10, 2023
4:00 pm - 5:30 pm
198 Hagerty Hall

The Chinese port city of Quanzhou was known as Zaytun in the medieval Islamicate world, and its bustling harbor witnessed an escalation of the scale and success for Muslim merchants in the Indian Ocean spice and ceramics trade between the 11th and 14th centuries. However, as Mongol control of coastal areas collapsed, life along the seaboard descended into chaos. This lecture will examine this tumultuous period in Chinese-Persianate history from the lens of shipwrecks recovered from the trade routes, situating the events on the coast within the context of broader developments within the Islamicate world.
