Professor James McDougall of Oxford University will speak on the role of Islam in revolutions in Africa. McDougall's talk will explore the role of religion in revolutionary--and counter-revolution--in North Africa over two centuries to the present. This talk is part of the Center for Historical Research's two-year program on revolutions from the ancient world to the Arab Spring, "You Say You Want a Revolution? Revolutions in Historical Perspective."
McDougall is Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Trinity College, Oxford. He is an expert on the history of Algerian nationalism in the long struggle against 130 years of French colonialism, as well as the more recent impact of the Arab Spring and the influence of Arab culture in Africa. His books include A History of Algeria (2017) and History and the Culture of Nationalism (2009), and he has recently published "Security, Sociology, and the Contemporary History of Islam" in the journal Annales.
