Event Host: Department of History
Professor Kevin Schultz, Professor of History at the University of Illinois-Chicago, will speak to the university community on James Baldwin's emergence from a writer dedicated purely to his art to a writer who found his voice through his uncompromising social and political commitments. Professor Schultz will follow Baldwin from his Parisian self-exile back to the United States, where he finished The Fire Next Time.
Schultz is currently chair of the UIC Department of History and president of the Society for US Intellectual History. His books include Buckley and Mailer: The Difficult Friendship That Shaped the 1960s, a history of the Sixties as seen through the peculiar friendship of William F. Buckley and Norman Mailer.
