On April 27, 1959 Luis Muñoz Marín, then Governor of Puerto Rico, gave the first of three Godkin lectures on "Nationalism and Its Effect on World Tensions." He spoke of a nation that had successfully transcended nationalism and joined a “great federalist idea.” He argued that his island-nation had by-passed what he termed "the political emotions of nationalism" and given birth to a new relationship with the U.S. Nearly sixty later, that relationship is on the brink of collapse. In this presentation Dr. José Díaz (The Ohio State University) will talk about the chasm between Muñoz Marín’s vision and Puerto Rico’s current reality. This event is free and open to the public.
