Every cell burns a staggering share of its energy building proteins, one ribosome-driven event at a time. But when trouble strikes—radiation, toxins, a damaged molecule of RNA, nutrient starvation—those ribosomes stall. They collide. And through that collision, a signal is born. The ribosome doesn't just make proteins; it keeps watch, and it decides: adapt, arrest, or die. Come learn how a stalled ribosome becomes a life-or-death switch for the cell—and what that means for cancer, aging, and disease.
Dr. Rachel Green received her BSc degree in chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1986 and her PhD from Harvard University in 1993. Her post-doctoral work was performed at the University of California, Santa Cruz where she began her work on ribosomes. She has been a member of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine since 1998. Dr. Green is currently a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor and serves as Director of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. She has been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator since 2000.
