Patricia Owens, professor of international relations at University of Sussex, will speak on Monday, March 21, on "When War is Oikonomia by Other Means" at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. Owens is author of Economy of Force: Counterinsurgency and the Historical Rise of the Social (Cambridge, 2015). She will present a new theory of counterinsurgency based on oikonomia, or household governance, showing how the idea of household administration plays a central role in international relations.
