Michael Lewis’ book Moneyball chronicled the Oakland A’s focus on non-traditional quantitative measures to identify overlooked players in the MLB draft, allowing them to make the playoffs in 2002 while having one of the smallest payrolls. Alumnus Greg Strizek will talk about his transition from social science researcher to sports analytics professional helping a NASCAR team win a championship. In this talk, Strizek will provide an overview of the data analytics field, providing examples of current research, a conceptual framework, a discussion of methods and other related topics. Greg Strizek, principal research analyst, Strategic Analytics, Inc., leads a research effort supporting the NASCAR Sprint Cup program for a major automobile manufacturer. He has worked with Achievement Metrics to develop models predicting NFL player behavior and performance based upon personality traits identified through analysis of player speech. In addition to his sports analytics work, Strizek has worked for a number of government and corporate clients. After earning his PhD in political science from Ohio State, Strizek accepted a position at the University of Colorado in 1997. Dr. Strizek moved from the University of Colorado to American Institutes from Research (AIR) in 1999, where he worked for eight years before founding Strategic Analytics. Strizek’s research has focused in the areas of education and survey research, and he has participated in conferences and/or published in the areas of education, statistics, sociology, sports analytics, and survey research. Dr. Strizek has taught in the political science department and the Graduate School of Political Management at George Washington University.  2130 Derby Hall, 154 N.
