Animated Film with Ohio State Ties Wins Oscar

Brave, the animated film from Pixar Animation Studios, on which several Ohio State arts and sciences alumni worked, won an Oscar for Best Animated Film on Sunday, February 24. Steve May, who earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in computer science and studied at the Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (ACCAD), is chief technology officer at Pixar and served as supervising technical director for Brave. Other alumni credited on the film include Fran Kalal (2005, BA, Design, 2008, MFA, Design), Beth Albright (2008, MFA, Design); Kyoung Lee (2004, MFA, Art); Jenny Macy (2000, BFA, Art).

Ohio State and the College of Arts and Sciences have previously featured our alumni involvement in Brave.

Another Ohio State alumnus who studied at ACCAD, Matthew Derksen (1997, BFA, Art; 2004, MFA, Art), served as rigging supervisor on the Oscar-winning film Life of Pi, which snagged the Academy Award for best visual effects. Derksen works for Rhythm & Hues, which also has created special effects for Snow White and the Huntsmen, The Bourne Legacy, The Hunger Games, and Django Unchained.
