David Clampitt Wins Publication Award

Earlier this month, the Society for Music Theory presented the Outstanding Publication Award to David Clampitt, associate professor and area head, theory and composition, and his co-author Thomas Noll, who teaches in Barcelona. The award recognized their article "Modes, the Height-Width Duality, and Handschin's Tone Character," published in Music Theory Online, one of the society’s two official journals. The award is presented annually for an exemplary article by a researcher at any career stage; this is the first time an article in the online journal has won. Clampitt accepted the award at the society’s annual conference in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Clampitt says he was completely surprised with the award, but he acknowledges the significance of the publication for the field of music theory. He joins colleague David Huron, professor, theory and composition, as the recipient now of two Society of Music Theory publication awards – only Ohio State and Yale can claim two faculty members with that distinction.
