Festival Honors Alumnus Carman Moore

A two-day Carman Moore New Music Festival in New York City will honor composer/conductor, Guggenheim Fellowship winner and Ohio State alumnus Carman Moore (BM, Music, 1958). Moore will lead his Skymusic Ensemble in a program of works at 8 pm October 18 at Manhattan's West Park Presbyterian Church. The following night at 7 pm, Moore will play keyboard and Danish vocalist Lotte Arnsbjerg will sing on the world premiere of their dramatic song cycle Girl Of Diamond Mountain.

Girl of Diamond Mountain is an operatic song cycle of 14 songs for keyboard and voice concerning the parental neglect of a young girl and her subsequent sexual abuse by her uncle. The songs also deal with the girl as she grows up wild and distorted before finding a degree of peace through love and spiritual understanding.

Born in Lorain, Ohio, and growing up in nearby Elyria, Moore moved to New York City after graduating from Ohio State; there he studied composition privately and at the Juilliard School, where he earned his master’s degree with distinction. Moore then began composing for symphony and chamber ensembles while writing lyrics for pop songs, gradually adding opera, theatre, dance and film scores to his body of work.
