Harald Vaessin named chair of Department of Molecular Genetics

Harald Vaessin

Harald Vaessin, professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics, was named chair of the department, effective June 1, 2018, through May 31, 2022.

Vaessin’s areas of expertise includes regulation of cell proliferation, terminal differentiation, molecular neurobiology and gene expression. Research in his laboratory examines how cell proliferation and terminal differentiation are regulated during neurogenesis, or the growth and development of nervous tissue.

In March 2018, Vaessin won the President and Provost’s Award for Distinguished Faculty Service, an accolade that recognizes faculty members who have been at Ohio State for at least five years and have served in major leadership roles. He has served for several years on the University Senate, contributing to or chairing university-wide committees.

Vaessin received his doctorate in developmental physiology from the University of Cologne in Germany.

"I am honored to have been selected for this role and look forward to guiding the Department of Molecular Genetics in its mission of excellence in research, teaching and service," Vaessin said.
