Anthony Kaldellis has been appointed to serve as chair of the Department of Classics, beginning July 1, 2017. Kaldellis earned his PhD in history at the University of Michigan in 2001 and joined the faculty of Ohio State’s Department of Greek and Latin (now Classics) that same year. He was promoted to professor in 2007 with a courtesy appointment in history.

Kaldellis is one of the leading historians of the Byzantine Empire — which succeeded the Roman Empire and ruled Greece, the Balkans and Asia Minor. He has published a number of books on its culture, literature and political history. Also an expert on Medieval Greek, Kaldellis has translated a number of Byzantine sources, mostly historical texts, dating from the sixth to the 15th centuries.

A prolific scholar, Kaldellis, among other works, has published 10 monographs, three of which have been translated into French, Greek, and Russian; eight book-length translations of Byzantine sources; 57 articles and book chapters; 28 reviews; and eight encyclopedia entries.

The recipient of several visiting-scholar fellowships, Kaldellis also has been an invited speaker at numerous conferences and academic lectures, serves on a variety of academic editorial and advisory boards, and frequently presents public outreach lectures.

Additionally, Kaldellis is a dedicated teacher and mentor to students at all levels, has trained many graduate students and teaches courses in both the Departments of Classics and History.
