Q. What exactly does a Fan Experience and Promotions intern do?

A. The title is just a fancy way of saying marketing. My job is to try and engage the fans, get them cheering, and make it so they want to come back. We work hand in hand with the band and cheerleaders.

 

Q. How is this experience shaping your future career aspirations?

A. It’s building me. I’m making connections. It’s who you know and THEN what you know. This internship has led to another internship with the Big Ten Network, giving me the opportunity to work the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago. It’s expanding me in a lot of ways beyond Ohio State but still within sports marketing.

 

Q. Do you find it difficult to balance school/internship duties?

A. Yes, some nights yes. After a basketball game, especially if we win, the last thing I want to do is come home and study for a midterm. I’m exhausted AND hyped up, so yes, it can be difficult.

 

Q. Do you have any tips for others on the balancing act?

A. Make sure the internship is what you want to do. If you’re just doing it for something to put on your resume, it’s not going to be fun. Ask questions and don’t be afraid to evolve. Just because it’s an internship doesn’t mean there isn’t room to expand. I started at the bottom and have worked my way up.

 

Q. Other than experience and connections, what’s been the best part about your internship?

A. Being front and center for traditions has been the best part. During football season I watched Script Ohio from the 50 yard line at every home game and was right there for Carmen Ohio with the band and cheerleaders.

 

Q. Do you have any advice for people looking for internships?

A. Go on websites and see who you can contact, an email’s not going to hurt. If they’re not the right person to contact they’ll typically forward you onto someone who can help you. Don’t be afraid to email a person. I emailed one person that led me to another person, which led to my internship.

 

Q. How are you preparing for March Madness?

A. I don’t even know! The madness has already started. Obviously I hope the Buckeyes go far. I would like to see the Bucks win it, but as long as M!ch!g@n’s not in the final four I’ll be happy.
