They Can Take The Heat: New Study Shows How Mosquitoes Handle a Hot Blood Meal
Dave Denlinger, professor of evolution, ecology, and organismal biology, has spent his life trying to put the "bite" on mosquitoes. Denlinger, who is a Distinguished University Professor and member of the National Academy of Science, is internationally-recognized for his work on insect physiology.
He has studied them everywhere, in some of the world's most unfriendly climates. Although mosquitoes are not his only subject--he spent time in Antarctica studying that continent's only insect, the midge--they do tend to be a perennial research subject. Little wonder, as they are notorious carriers of disease and responsible for the deaths of millions of people and animals, annually.
One of the first to make the landmark discovery that insects produce hormones, he has gone on to build a significant body of research on the insect life-cycle, from diapause to heat-shock proteins. Denlinger never underestimates their resourcefulness.
This latest study, explores for the first time, how mosquitoes handle the stress of a hot-blood meal. It turns out they make proteins to help them.
