TRAVEL TO HIGHER-RISK LOCATIONS, TRAVEL REGISTRATION AND INTERNATIONAL ACCIDENT AND SICKNESS INSURANCE

Travel to Higher-Risk Locations

University supported travel to higher-risk locations requires review and may entail restrictions or stipulations.

Undergraduate students:
  • Ohio State scholarship or grant funding for travel to higher-risk countries is available for use on approved education abroad programs listed in the Office of International Affairs (OIA) education abroad search engine or other university managed travel approved by the International Travel Review Committee (ITRC).

  • Ohio State scholarship or grant funding for individual travel to higher-risk countries or locations requires ITRC review and approval. Funding is restricted for travel that does not receive ITRC.

  • The ITRC petition process takes academic rationale, itinerary and an individual safety plan into consideration. Petitions should be submitted at least 90-days in advance of travel and prior to utilization of university funding.

For further information on the ITRC travel to higher-risk locations policy or the petition process, please contact the OIA Global Health and Safety team at IRM@osu.edu.

Travel Registration and International Accident and Sickness Insurance

Ohio State students using university scholarship or grant funding for individual travel to international locations are required to register their travel.

Travel Registration includes completion of emergency response information, access to pre-departure health and safety modules and automatic enrollment in the international accident and sickness insurance.

The insurance includes comprehensive coverage for pre-departure security and medical traveler advice, emergent medical care (physical and mental health), medical evacuation, repatriation, and political security and natural disaster evacuation. Access to pre-travel and onsite support is managed by Crisis24.

Students are billed a modest fee for the insurance coverage which students should calculate into budget proposals for funding.

Students participating in education abroad programming coordinated through OIA are already registered in the system and automatically enrolled in the international accident and sickness insurance.
