Art Instructor Receives Fulbright Scholarship

In addition to being an artist, art instructor, and alum, Larissa Mellor has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study drawing in Germany from September 2010 thru July 2011. “I can’t wait to get to Germany. To continue growing as an artist, I need to understand the multiple perspectives on how others interpret art,” said Mellor.

This summer, Mellor will be doing an installation art show called Transit in Russia. Presented by The Moscow Biennale for Young Art, Transit will address the phenomenon of boundaries and its possible interpretations. This will be her first international show.

“I hope to always make work that will educate, tell a story, or promote dialogue all at once, wherever I am,” said Mellor.

A native of Philadelphia, Mellor received a BFA from Maine College of Art and chose to pursue her MFA at the Ohio State because of its affordability and commitment to the arts. Since coming to Ohio State, Mellor’s work has been featured at the Ohio Art League, Urban Arts Space, and she currently teaches a Life Drawing course for the Department of Art.

The Department of Art gave Mellor access to a variety of experiences that contributed to her growth as an artist—from the thesis committee that encouraged her to apply for a Fulbright Scholarship to the students that have shown her the importance of mentorship and patience.

“I think if I had to make a list thanking those that have helped and inspired me, the list would go on forever because it is constantly growing and so are my opportunities. It’s all starting right here, right now,” said Mellor.
