As the 2021-2022 academic year comes to a close, it is a natural time to reflect on and appreciate what has been accomplished these past few semesters. The extraordinary breadth of what we can achieve is due to the collaboration, curiosity, and passion of our students, faculty, and staff, and the College of Arts and Sciences grows stronger each year because of the intentionality of our friends and partners.
Arts and Sciences donors are paving the way for affordable education at Ohio State
The Scarlet & Gray Advantage program will empower eligible Ohio State students to earn their bachelor’s degree debt-free. With scholarships, internships, career coaching and other programs to help students begin their careers on a strong footing, this initiative is funded by donors and the university, which has pledged to match up to $50 million in private donations.

Buckeye Funder raises over $10,000 toward Children's Hearing Aid Fund
In fall 2021, The Ohio State University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic and the Student Academy of Audiology at Ohio State organized their first Buckeye Funder project to support the Children’s Hearing Aid Fund (CHAF), an initiative to purchase and fit hearing aids to children who are patients at the clinic that have no resources to obtain hearing aids.
With contributions from over 100 students, faculty, friends, family, colleagues, patients and community members, the project ultimately raised $10,289 toward a $10,000 goal.
Monda Scholarship opens world of opportunities for students
During the past two years, study abroad travel opportunities were limited due to COVID-19 precautions. However, Arts and Sciences students are slowly but surely beginning to enroll in programs to take them all over the globe in the coming semesters.
One of the largest scholarships to fund travel at the college was gifted by Ohio State alumnus Keith Monda ’68, ‘71. The Monda International Experience Scholarship is a need-based award open to Columbus campus undergraduate students with a declared major in the Arts and Sciences.

Mayo Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Program boosts representation in field of design
Psychology alumnus Joseph Wisne ’86 and English alumna Bridgette Mariea ’89 funded the Mayo Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Program, named after Ohio Eminent Scholar and advocate for Black students Noel Mayo. The new program sets first-year students up with third- and fourth-year student mentors of diverse backgrounds, and participants from both groups will receive scholarships.

2022 Honoring Excellence recognizes service, achievement by distinguished alumni
Each spring, the College of Arts and Sciences' Honoring Excellence ceremony recognizes a distinguished few of our more than 220,000 living alumni whose accomplishments are tangible evidence of the lasting value of an Arts and Sciences education. Their contributions and achievements in their chosen fields, communities, country and university are creating a lasting impact — locally and globally.
This year, Honoring Excellence celebrated seven individuals for their extraordinary successes and service. With backgrounds and careers spanning the areas of technology and entrepreneurship, marketing, drug development, public service, entertainment and media, and international relations, this year’s group of honorees exemplify what it means to be a Buckeye for Life.
After 2020 hiatus, Earth sciences field experiences return
Students in the College of Arts and Sciences didn't just return to the classroom in autumn 2021 — they returned to the field. In the School of Earth Sciences, few things symbolized this renewal quite like the resumption of two eye-opening field experiences that were both cancelled in 2020.
Q&A with horror legend and English alum R.L. Stine
Just hearing his name can send shivers down your spine. His books leave a horrifying sense of dread. R.L. Stine ’65 is one of the Arts and Sciences' spookiest alumni. We sat down with the literary mastermind behind the Goosebumps series to discuss what he's up to, his R.L. Stine Scholarship, the recent Netflix series based on his "Fear Street" books and the Stine-influenced Disney+ show, "Just Beyond."
