The Byrd Polar Research Center Selected to Host International Symposium on Earth’s Disappearing Ice

In celebration of the 50^th Anniversary of the Byrd Polar Research Center, the International Glaciological Society (IGS) will hold an International Symposium on Earth’s Disappearing Ice, at Ohio State, August 15–20.

The International Glaciological Society (IGS) was founded in 1936 to provide a focus for individuals interested in practical and scientific aspects of snow and ice. Scientists and researchers from around the globe will convene in Columbus to present their research on sea ice extent and thickness changes in the Arctic and Antarctic; tidewater glacier dynamics; ice shelf dynamics; ice streams and outlet glacier dynamics; glacier and ice-sheet mass balance; alpine glaciers; and past glacier changes.

One of the most visible indicators of climate change is the response of Earth’s ice cover.

Senior research scientists from the Byrd Polar Research Center presenting at the symposium include Yushin Ahn, Jason Box, Paolo Gabrielli, Bryan Mark, Harunur Rashid, C. K. Shum, Nathan Stansell, Ellen Mosley-Thompson, and Lonnie Thompson. Students presenting their research include David Decker, Kyung-In Huh, Jessica Human, Julies Markus, Ellyn McFadden, and Kaitlin Walsh.
