Communication Professor on National Panel on Gun Violence

Brad Bushman, professor of communication and psychology, has been invited by the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council of the National Academies to participate in a workshop of the Committee on Priorities for a Public Health Research Agenda to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-related Violence, in response to President Obama’s recent executive orders addressing gun violence. The workshop is scheduled for April 23 in Washington, DC.

Bushman will participate in a panel discussion that will provide input on research questions that would improve the understanding and impact of violence in video games, the media, and social media on real-life gun violence.

It is anticipated that the committee’s report will be publicly published by the end of June.

Bushman is considered a leading scholar in the field of media violence and youth violence. He is co-chair of the Subcommittee on Youth Violence of the Advisory Committee to the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Directorate, National Science Foundation. Recently, he spoke with PBS NewsHour reporter Jeffrey Brown for part of a weeklong special, “After Newtown,” on the link between violent video games and increased aggressive behavior.
