Gene Friley: Garden Delights

Professor Emeritus Eugene Friley, with the help of Biological Sciences’ Greenhouse Supervisor Joan Leonard, has created Garden Delights, an enchanted space where art and nature merge. You may enjoy this quiet haven in the Hopkins Hall Gallery through November 12.

Professor Emeritus Eugene Friley, Ohio State class of 1947 (BFA) and class of 1949 (MFA), taught in the ceramics program for more than forty years. He entered OSU in 1939 and became a ceramic engineering major, but placed his studies on hold to serve in the Air Force as a B-29 bombardier in World War II–Pacific Theatre. After The War, he returned to Ohio State, finished his degrees as a ceramic art major, and joined the faculty.

Friley’s studio work includes ceramics, drawing, painting, public art, garden sculptures, fountains and innovative uses of ceramic materials. Figurative forms, playful organic designs, and nature’s presence abound in his art and in this gallery-turned-garden celebration of our esteemed alumni and colleague.

Sponsored by the Department of Art Bevlyn Simson Exhibition Fund and Hopkins Gallery. We extend a special thank you to the Department of Biological Sciences Greenhouse and Joan Leonard for environmental assistance.
