Journalism Building Garners Award for Outstanding Design
Ohio State’s Journalism building renovation has been awarded a Gold Citation for outstanding design from the American School & University magazine’s 2010 Educational Interiors Showcase. The Showcase spotlights projects representing some of the most effective learning environments in America.
A jury of American Institute of Architects (AlA) members and education administrators evaluated submissions from architectural firms, schools and universities across the country. The 2010 Educational Interiors Showcase jury declared of the Journalism building renovations, “Tremendous value! An amazing interior space transformation; elegant colors, finishes and furniture.”
The Journalism building renovation provides the School of Communication with a recognizable presence and expands research capabilities. New Gaming Research and Audience Response Lab allows the School to pursue new avenues of research and study, increasing its academic influence.
On the first floor, the original 1920's facade was removed to create a light and open aesthetic for a new 50-seat communication research room. New full-height glass panels allow natural light to fill the room and extend visibility to the street beyond. The lobby has been transformed into a welcoming space that meets students' needs.
The renovation also transformed an abandoned library space into a new 37-person open office suite and converted an under-utilized TV production studio into a state-of-the-art, 120-seat, multi-media classroom with distance learning capabilities.
American School & University magazine has hosted the competition for educational interior design projects since 1983. For more information, visit http://schooldesigns.com/Educational-Interiors-Showcase.aspx
