Six Ohio State undergraduate students have been named recipients of 2017-2018 Boren Scholarships, according to an announcement from the Center for Languages, Literatures and Cultures (CLLC) at Ohio State. The scholarships are an initiative of the National Security Education Program, which provides unique funding opportunities for students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests. These areas are often underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America and the Middle East.

Recipients receive up to $20,000 to study abroad for an academic year. Students receiving the scholarships are (pictured left to right below):

Christian Gray, a political science and French double major, will be studying Mandarin at National Taiwan University.

Caroline Carroll, a world economy and business (under international studies) and Japanese double major with minors in business and engineering, will be studying Japanese at Hokkaido University.

Clayton Sharb, a political science and area studies major, will be studying Arabic at Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Courtney Johnson, a communication and history of art double major with a minor in South Asian studies, will study Hindi as part of the South Asian Language Flagship Initiative at the American Institute of Indian Studies.

Turner Adornetto, studying engineering and social sciences, will take part in the African Flagship Languages Initiative, studying Swahili in Tanzania.

Natalie Hettle, an international affairs major, will be studying Arabic at the Center for International Learning in Oman.
