Whittington named chair of Department of History of Art

Karl Whittington, associate professor in the Department of History of Art, has been promoted from interim chair to chair of the department for a four-year term, effective July 1. Whittington, who has been a department faculty member since 2010, specializes in European medieval art and architecture with a focus on issues relating to the history of science, gender and sexuality, and image theory. His first book, Body-Worlds: Opicinus de Canistris and the Medieval Cartography Imagination, was published in 2014, and his upcoming book, Trecento Pictoriality: Diagrammatic Painting in Late Medieval Italy, explores the role of scientific and diagrammatic imagery in the cultivation of religious and political authority in medieval public spaces.
