Art (BFA, BA)

Art (BFA, BA)

Majors

The Department of Art offers two undergraduate degrees, a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts. BA students experiment with material and content through the production, examination and evaluation of the visual arts and gain skills in networking, persuasion and project management. They have numerous opportunities to work within the larger community to effect positive change.

BFA students explore the realization of ideas and the creation of meaning through the production of images, objects, performances and experiences. The program is broad-based, both discipline-intensive and boundary-pushing, a modern laboratory in which students create and explore art and ideas. BFA students prepare their portfolios for review and acceptance by a specific area of emphasis in the BFA degree program.

The specialities are:

  • art and technology
  • ceramics
  • glass
  • painting and drawing
  • photography
  • printmaking
  • sculpture

Why choose art?

The Department of Art is one of the most comprehensive, exclusively studio-based art departments in the U.S., and its undergraduate programs are recognized nationally and internationally. Ohio State's art community enjoys collaboration and networking among not only each other, but within the vibrant and diverse Columbus art scene. The studio facilities, located on the Oval and West Campus, are exemplary. The department also maintains an active exhibition schedule in its own galleries and critique spaces supplemented by the Urban Arts Space in downtown Columbus and the Wexner Center for the Arts

What can you do with this degree?

Art provides students with unique, creative approaches to problem solving and project management. In addition to establishing careers as artists, graduates have entered diverse professions such as law, medicine, architecture and fundraising. Many art majors also eventually find their way into arts administration positions, either within museums, galleries, public agencies (such as state or city arts councils) or within educational institutions.
