Short Description: Ellen Samuels to deliver a public talk entitled “Will the Real Disabled Person Please Stand Up? Or What’s Wrong with This Picture?”
Ellen Samuels will deliver a public talk entitled “Will the Real Disabled Person Please Stand Up? Or What’s Wrong with This Picture?” Her talk will focus on the ways that social media provides a window into broader social perceptions of disability, highlighting incidents involving Kanye West, George Takei and police killings of African American and Native people. Samuels will discuss the ways that these events bring the intersections of race, disability and policing into stark focus, and result in policies that affect economic benefits, accommodations and civil rights for disabled people.
Samuels is the author of the book Fantasies of Identification: Disability, Gender, Race (NYU Press, 2014) and was awarded the Catharine Stimpson Prize for Outstanding Feminist Scholarship in 2011.
