The Legacy of Driss Chraïbi
Please join us for an intimate encounter with Sheena McCallion Chraïbi and students from Professor Danielle Marx-Scouras’s French 5206 North Africa course (“Maghreb Pluriel”) on 8 March 2023 from 12:45 to 2:05 PM (Eastern Standard Time). Sheena will lead us in a discussion, both in French and English, on the life and work of her late husband, Driss Chraïbi, a foremost Moroccan writer of French expression. We shall focus on two of his most influential novels, Le Passé simple (1954, The Simple Past, 1990/2020) and La Civilisation, ma Mère!…(1972, Mother Comes of Age, 1984). Both of these novels were translated by the late Dr. Hugh A. Harter, who received his B.A. in French and his Ph.D. in Spanish from The Ohio State University.
