BY WRITING ABOUT LOVE

Several winters ago, MFA Student in the Department of English Suzannah Showler sifted through channels for a less-than-intellectually-stimulating TV show as she let her feverish mind and flu-stricken body recoup. She eventually stumbled upon "The Bachelor," the fairy-tale game show embedded with jealousy, scandal, playfulness and, most importantly, love.

Showler has since turned her fascination with America's favorite romantic reality show and its spin-offs into a career, writing about reality shows for BuzzFeedSlateLos Angeles Review of Books and more. And now, she gives an in-depth critique of "The Bachelor" in her latest book, "Most Dramatic Ever: The Bachelor."

BY SUPPORTING MARCHING BAND SCHOLARSHIPS

Jack and Barbara Nicklaus — who met as Ohio State freshmen on the steps of Mendenhall Laboratory — are serving as honorary co-chairs of The Ohio State University Marching Band's 100% TBDBITL scholarship initiative, which is raising $10 million in endowed scholarship funds to support every marching band student now and in the future.

“The Ohio State Marching Band has always been a big part of the university experience. It is among the many aspects of the Ohio State life that we loved when Barbara and I were students and still cherish decades later,” Jack said. “The students who make up the Ohio State Marching Band work extremely hard, on and off the field, and now we want to be there for them, and we hope others will join us.”

BY SPREADING HOPE WHEN MIRACLES HAPPEN

When Fiona the hippo was born six weeks premature last year at the Cincinnati Zoo, 2007 Ohio State Alumna Angela Hatke, the zoo's communications coordinator, was there to chronicle Fiona's journey to the public and spread hope for animals in the future.

“I’m so thankful for the education I received from the School of Communication," Hatke said. "I wouldn’t be here today, with my dream job at the Cincinnati Zoo, without it.”

BY FIGHTING TO SAVE CORAL REEFS

Professor of Earth Sciences Andrea Grottoli is conducting some of the world’s leading research on what drives coral reef resillience amid rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification.

"I'm motivated to do this kind of research because I see the irreversible trend of climate change that we’re on; I see the demise of coral reefs every year and I want to make a difference," Grottoli said. "I want to be part of the solution."

BY MAKING SCIENCE ACCESSIBLE TO THOSE WITH DISABILITIES

Anna Voelker, fourth-year science communication and accessibility major, has embarked on a lifelong quest to make science accessible to everyone, specifically those living with physical and cognitive disabilities. And after receiving the President's Prize, which is given annually to two Ohio State graduating seniors and includes a $50,000 living stipend and up to $50,000 in funding to implement an innovative project, Voelker's dream can finally be realized.

"It is my goal to make science a more diverse, welcoming and inclusive field,” Voelker said. "At the end of the day, my message is simple: if science is important to you, then you have the potential to be important to science."

BY ENGAGING WITH VETERANS DURING THEIR TRANSITION TO CIVILIAN LIFE

The Ohio State Department of Theatre embarked on a new program last spring that utilized workshops based on Shakespeare plays to interact with military personnel, veterans and their families with the goal of helping them find new ways to give expression to their experiences as they transitioned from soldiers to civilians. And yes, that happened. But the MFA theatre students who led the workshops gained just as much from the experience as the veterans.
