Xiu appointed chair of Department of Math

Dongbin Xiu, a professor in the Department of Mathematics, has been appointed chair of the department beginning July 1, 2024. He previously served as interim chair.

Xiu’s research interests include machine learning, uncertainty quantification, scientific computing and numerical analysis. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Department of Energy and DARPA.

“I look forward to working closely with the faculty and staff to build a better math department," Xiu said. "We built a solid foundation for this during my interim term, and I’m confident that we are ready for more.”

Xiu, also an associate editor of the International Journal for Uncertainty Quantification, holds a PhD in applied mathematics from Brown University and degrees from the University of Virginia and Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China. He joined the Department of Mathematics in 2016.
