ASC Honors Its Own: Faculty/Graduate Students Receive 2014 Awards

The annual College of Arts and Sciences Spring Recognition Reception honors outstanding performance by faculty and graduate students with awards for teaching, service, scholarship and mentoring. The 2014 ASC Awards were presented April 7.


Harlan Hatcher Arts and Sciences Distinguished Faculty Award

Jane Hathaway, professor, Department of History, received the 2013-2014 Harlan Hatcher Arts and Sciences Distinguished Faculty Award. The award recognizes a full professor who has an exceptional record in teaching, research and service. Established in 2002 by Mrs. Anne Hatcher and her family, the award honors Dr. Harlan Hatcher, an alumnus and former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and president of the University of Michigan from 1951-1967. The recipient receives a one-time award of $3,000.

Honors Faculty Service Award

Sergei Chmutov, professor, Department of Mathematics, received the 2013-2014 Honors Faculty Service Award. The award recognizes excellence in honors advising, instruction, committee work and other honors initiatives and responsibilities that have enhanced the quality of education available to honors students in the arts and sciences. The recipient receives a one-time award of $1,000.

Outstanding Teaching Award

Lanier Holt, assistant professor, School of Communication, received the 2013-2014 Outstanding Teaching Award. Administered by the College of Arts and Sciences Student Council, the Outstanding Teaching Award recognizes exceptional teaching by an arts and sciences faculty member. It is the only faculty teaching award administered entirely by students—from nomination to selection. It also is notable in that it has been given annually since 1947. The recipient receives a one-time award of $1,000.

Joel Wainwright, associate professor, Department of Geography, honored as an Outstanding Teaching Award finalist.

Susan M. Hartmann Mentoring and Leadership Award

Claudia Turro, professor, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, is the first recipient of the new Susan M. Hartmann Mentoring and Leadership Award. This award recognizes a faculty or staff member—or student—who exemplifies unselfish, ongoing mentoring and leadership that effectively promotes fairness and equal opportunities for everyone, particularly women or other historically underrepresented groups. The recipient receives a one-time award of $1,000.

Gary Wenk, professor, Department of Psychology, honored as a Susan M. Hartmann Mentoring and Leadership Award finalist.

Outstanding Graduate Associate Teaching Award

Eric Egan, Department of Psychology, received the 2013-2014 Outstanding Graduate Associate Teaching Award. This award is administered by the College of Arts and Sciences Student Council and recognizes an arts and sciences Graduate Teaching Associate for excellence in teaching. The award was inaugurated by the Student Council in 2010. The recipient receives a one-time award of $500.

Melonie Mazibuko, Department of Theatre, honored as an Outstanding Graduate Associate Teaching Award finalist.
